By the time I was eight years old, I knew I wanted to be an author. Technically, I wanted to be an author “like JK Rowling,” but even then I would have been satisfied just to spend my days writing stories.

I held onto this dream until about high school, when I began receiving messages from society that being an author was not a “real job” — at least not a job with a clear and achievable path.

Well, it was a winding road to get back to what my third-grade self already knew, but 17 novels later, I am making a good living from my fiction.

I know — I am incredibly lucky. But honestly, luck had very little to do with it. I worked very hard for several years and built a business slowly around my fiction. It was an arduous process because when I first started, I had no idea what I was doing. Back then there was no clear path to follow — at least not one that anyone wanted to share.

I didn’t know whether I should try to get an agent or go the self-publishing route.

I didn’t know what my author brand was.

I didn’t have an “author platform.”

I didn’t know whether I should be exclusive to Amazon or publish across all platforms.

I didn’t know how to go about creating e-books, print books, or audiobooks.

I knew nothing about email marketing, social media, or paid ads.

If I had known then what all I didn’t know, I’m not sure I ever would have started. It took a lot of trial and error (mostly error) to establish systems for myself so that I could start running my business like a business.

It would have been so much easier and less stressful if someone had taken me by the hand and broken down each component of the author business landscape.

It would have been glorious to have all of my options laid out neatly in front of me by someone who had been there before. I wish I could have peeked into other authors’ businesses and learned from their mistakes. I wish I’d had a professional to steer me in the right direction when I just didn’t know where to start.

This is why I created Author Business Boot Camp — to help aspiring authors like you build a strong business faster without all the headaches and frustrations that I experienced firsthand.
